Defending Durand Cup champions NorthEast United FC are all set to kick off their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 campaign against newly-promoted Mohammedan SC at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata. The match is scheduled for Monday, September 16, at 7:30 PM IST.
Mohammedan SC earned their place in the ISL by winning the I-League 2023-24, while the Highlanders finished seventh in the top tier last season.
“We want to embrace the ISL experience”
Mohammedan SC head coach Andrey Chernyshov is setting realistic expectations for his players as they prepare for their first season in the ISL. Rather than aiming for immediate high achievements, he is focused on helping his squad absorb the intensity and quality of the league while fostering a fighting spirit.
“Our first goal is to build a strong team for the ISL. We know this competition is tough, and we’ll be up against many top Indian and foreign players. We need to take in the experience of playing in the ISL and fight in every match, delivering good football for the fans. This is our primary motivation, and we hope to improve as we move forward,” said Chernyshov.
“Durand Cup is history”
NorthEast United FC, fresh from their Durand Cup triumph, are shifting their focus to the upcoming ISL season. Head coach Juan Pedro Benali is determined not to dwell on past successes, emphasizing the importance of looking ahead.
While the team narrowly missed out on a playoff spot last season, Benali is eager to ensure that they leave no room for regrets this time around.
“The feeling of winning the Durand Cup was amazing, but it lasted for just 24 hours. We can’t live in that moment if we want to progress. It’s great for the record books, but now, our focus has to be on the next game,” Benali stated.
“We approach every match with the mentality that it’s a final. We know we’re up against a strong team, a talented coach, in a fantastic stadium with passionate fans. Our approach needs to be smart, calm, and composed,” he added.
This highly-anticipated match will mark Mohammedan SC’s ISL debut, adding extra excitement for the home fans in Kolkata. Both teams will be eager to start their campaigns with a strong performance.
