In a recent ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Kerala Blasters FC has been directed to pay a hefty fine of Rs 4 crore to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for their actions during last season’s Indian Super League match against Bengaluru FC.

The controversy arose when Kerala Blasters walked out of the game against Bengaluru FC, citing communication issues within their management. Despite their argument, CAS upheld AIFF’s decision and mandated the payment of the fine within two weeks. Additionally, Kerala Blasters must cover AIFF’s legal expenses incurred during the dispute resolution process.

According to a senior official, CAS’s ruling vindicates AIFF, reaffirming its authority in matters of sports-related disputes. The decision highlights CAS’s role as a prominent global platform for resolving such issues.

The dispute stemmed from Kerala Blasters’ coach, Ivan Vukomanovic’s, decision to instruct the team to abandon the match after a contentious refereeing call resulted in a goal by Sunil Chhetri for Bengaluru FC. Despite attempts by officials, including referee Crystal John and match commissioner Amit Dharap, to resolve the situation, Kerala Blasters proceeded with their decision to walk out.

AIFF’s disciplinary committee initially fined Kerala Blasters Rs 4 crore, emphasizing that the abandonment of the game contradicted the principles of fair play, respect, and integrity. Although Kerala Blasters appealed the decision, CAS upheld the penalty, deeming it appropriate given the circumstances.
