Arrival and Welcome:
Jamie Maclaren, Mohun Bagan’s marquee signing, arrived in Kolkata late Sunday night, 28th July, receiving a hero’s welcome at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. The Mariners’ fans greeted him with garlands and cheers, while the club’s management was also present to welcome the new star. Interestingly, Maclaren’s birthday coincides with Mohun Bagan Day, celebrated on 29th July.
Training and Team Integration:
Maclaren joined his new teammates for training on Mohun Bagan Day, marking an auspicious start to his tenure with the club. The Australian striker is expected to be a key player for the Durand Cup 2023 and ISL League Winners’ Shield 2023-24 champions, especially following the departure of prolific goalscorer Armando Sadiku.
New Signings and Squad Dynamics:
Maclaren will be supported by new arrivals, including midfield maestro Greg Stewart, formerly of Jamshedpur FC and Mumbai City, and Australian compatriot Jason Cummings. These additions, along with mainstays like Glan Martins, Asish Rai, and newly signed Tommy Aldred, strengthen the squad’s depth and capabilities.

Pre-Season and Historical Significance:
The team resumed training on Mohun Bagan Day, a significant date in the club’s history. Since 2001, 29th July has been celebrated as Mohun Bagan Day, commemorating the club’s historic IFA Shield victory in 1911 against East Yorkshire, a British regimental team.
The Mariners are already off to a strong start with a victory against Downtown Heroes in the Durand Cup 2024 group stage. They are set to face the Indian Air Force next week at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata.
Looking Ahead:
With a talented squad and new signings eager to make an impact, Mohun Bagan is poised for another successful season. The fans’ enthusiasm and the team’s hard work during pre-season training set a promising tone for the upcoming competitions.
